Changing Beliefs Through Natural Hypnosis

by Kelesyn Winter

As published in the Volume 3 - Fall 2000 edition of Brass Ring Bookstore Perspectives

"Natural hypnosis is the acquiescence of the unconscious to conscious belief. In periods of concentrated focus, with all distractions cut out, the desired ideas are then implanted (in formal hypnosis). The same processes occur in normal life, however; areas of primary concentration then regulate your experience both biologically and mentally, and generate similar conditions."

—Seth. The Nature of Personal Reality.
Chapter 16, session 659.
Often I hear Seth readers complain that Seth doesn't provide enough practical exercises for creating reality. Some people (including some well-known "channelers") even justify their powerlessness by claiming that we only create our reality some of the time, which is silly when you think about it. We're constantly changing our beliefs and, thus, changing our reality. Each waking moment, we create ourselves anew. By jumping probabilities, we emerge in new realities complete with new past histories built in and new futures to be explored. Usually, the changes go unnoticed, as beliefs come and go like breath passing in and out of our bodies, just beneath our usual awareness of them.

The Seth material has given readers perhaps the most effective means with which to transform reality. By becoming fully conscious of our thoughts and feelings in the present, we can gain more conscious control of our reality-creating, and thus lead happier, more fulfilling lives. Can it be any simpler? Accomplished faster? You bet. In The Nature of Personal Reality, Seth suggests that natural hypnosis may be the single most powerful tool we have for changing our reality. "Formal hypnosis merely brings about an accelerated version of what goes on all the time. It is a perfect example of the instantaneous results possible ideally—but not usually seen practically—as present beliefs negate past ones" (chapter 15, session 658). Hypnosis is simply a state of focused attention on a single thought; it is not, as has been supposed by laymen, a condition of passive sleep. During natural hypnosis, the subconscious is able to utilize inner resources to greater effectiveness. Seth says, "This intensity of concentration cuts down barriers and allows the messages to go directly to the unconscious where they are acted upon" (chapter 16, session 659).

How is this done? Quite simply, one enters a light trance state and repeats the new belief to the subconscious mind. You can use the techniques Jane suggests in chapters seven and eight of her book, How to Develop Your ESP Power. Begin by closing your eyes and relaxing the body completely. Turn the focus of your thoughts inward by exploring the darkness behind your eyelids. For the moment, do not dwell upon any problems that may be concerning you. Instead imagine you are descending a staircase (or elevator or a on a cloud). Use whatever imagery appeals to you that works. If you feel yourself becoming sleepy, tell yourself you will remain alert and receptive. With practice, you will be able to remain in trance for longer periods of time. Then, for a period of five to ten minutes at most, imagine your desire becoming flesh and bone reality and repeat the affirmation aloud or mentally to yourself. The new belief will take root and grow in the subconscious, eventually emerging in physical reality as the situation or thing desired.

Affirmation simply means to strengthen something you hold as truth. The repetition, verbally or mentally, activates impulses that seek expression in physical reality. I will have more to say about affirmations in a future article. Although Seth doesn't mention it in his book, an old rule of thumb says to picture the goal or end result, not the means, and be specific. Leave the "how" to your inner self. When you have finished the exercise, try to put it out of your mind for a while.

The final step is to perform some symbolic action that represents your faith in the new belief. This also helps to internalize it, so that the new belief becomes a part of you physically, as well as emotionally and intellectually. The new belief thus becomes automatic and engages all parts of the self. It also provides more avenues for the belief to manifest. You wouldn't expect a new car (or house or job), for instance, to knock on your door without taking some kind of action to look for and secure it. It demonstrates to the inner self that you mean business.

In addition, the Point of Power exercise will help raise your confidence in your ability to change old patterns of beliefs. (See session 656 in chapter 15.) My partner, Jim Schutte likes to do the Point of Power exercise when he feels short on creative solutions. He says the exercise opens up pathways that were blocked or not visible to him before. The two exercises should not run into each other, but should be carried out on separate occasions during the day, according to Seth. Remember that you repattern your past and future from the present moment. So don't continue to dwell on the old limiting beliefs, or you will perpetuate the problem in the present as well.

That's all there is to natural hypnosis. "The point of power exercise is meant to familiarize you with your own energy and your ability to direct it. The natural hypnosis exercises....allows you greater effectiveness in directing and focusing that power" (chapter 17, session 663). Regular practice can help us achieve goals faster and in ways we find more fulfilling. It may take
